Letter, 12 Jan. 1863, from Jane T. Goss to her son, re family news, conditions at home, hiring-out of African-American slaves to various persons, inquiring whether Goss had collected the box left for him at Weldon [N.C.?], and urging her son to write from Richmond, Va., upon his arrival. Letter, 14 Nov. 1876, Tallahassee, Fla., from Edward Davis, 1st Lt., 3rd Artillery, [United States Army], describing his veterans' reunion encampment, reporting that he had become reaquainted with many friends not seen since end of the Civil War, describing pleasant camp on the Florida State House grounds, mentioning his wife and children in the "icey northeast," thanking Goss for kindnesses shown him during his encampment in Union, S.C., expressing affection for the residents, asking to be remembered to Gen[era]ls [William Henry] Wallace and Gist. Other topics discussed in this letter include strong support and admiration for Wade Hampton among civilians and officers-- "we will pronounce him President of the United States, if [Republican national chairman Zachariah] Chandler and [Democratic national chairman Abram] Hewitt don't soon settle the mooted question somewhere else" [of who won the 1876 presidential election: Rutherford Hayes or Samuel Tilden].
